Workshop Overview

Have you ever been so deep underground it’s as if you’ve been taken back in time? At Poole’s Cavern experienced guides will lead you as you explore a space filled with history and scientific interest. Many visitors have found refuge in the huge underground caverns on the edge of Buxton. From stone age cave dwellers, Roman jewellers, medieval robbers, 16th century queens to Victorian visitors. Whether your focus is on the science of rocks and fossils, ancient history, the water cycle, environmental studies, history of tourism or paleo-biology: Poole’s Cavern can offer a bespoke learning experience.

Our suggested themed itinerary

Why not make a full day of your visit to Buxton by combining up to 3 different workshops visiting multiple venues to suit your requirements and learning outcomes.

9:45 AM - ARRIVAL

Drop off at the old Thermal Baths, welcome and safety briefing

10:00 AM - BUXTON: WATER AND WELL WOMEN (The Pump Room)

Meet Mary the Buxton Well Woman and sample the famous Buxton waters

11:00 AM - ROMAN BUXTON (Buxton Museum)

Watch the puppet story of a Roman soldier brought from Portugal to serve in Britain and help them save money for their retirement.

12:00 PM - LUNCH BREAK (Buxton Town / Poole's Cavern)

Travel via coach (or on foot if you’re not too hungry!) to Poole’s Cavern and Country Park to take lunch and prepare for the afternoon’s adventure!

1:15 PM - SPECTACULAR CAVE TOUR (Poole's Cavern)

Join an expert cave guide to explore the spectacular ancient Poole’s Cavern cave system

2.15pm - End of day
Collection at the coach park at Poole’s Cavern or a brisk walk back to the train station.
