Workshop Overview

People have hidden, buried, squirrelled away and lost precious objects since ancient times. Explore the displays of stunning artefacts in the Wonders of the Peaks gallery, learning about ancient buried treasure, how it was lost, and found and what it can tell us about life in the past. Digging deeper and getting hands on with history from all eras, you will assume the roles of metal detectorists, archaeologists, and museum professionals as you aim to find, preserve, label and display your own Buxton hoards.

Why not make a full day of your visit to Buxton by combining up to 3 different workshops visiting multiple venues to suit your requirements and learning outcomes.

9:45 AM - ARRIVAL

Drop off at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Terrace Road. Welcome and safety briefing

10:00 AM - Hoard Hunting: Hidden Histories (Buxton Museum)
Getting hands-on with history from all eras, you will assume the roles of metal detectorist, archaeologists, and museum professionals as you aim to find your own Buxton hoards.
11:00 AM - Roman Buxton (Buxton Museum)

Learn a story of Roman visitors to Buxton, with the Fabula Aquae puppet performance and workshop. Can you help our auxilliary soldier save enough denarii for retirement?

12:00 PM - LUNCH BREAK (Buxton Town / Poole's Cavern)

Travel via coach (or on foot if you’re not too hungry!) to Poole’s Cavern and Country Park to take lunch and prepare for the afternoon’s excitement!

1:15 PM - SPECTACULAR CAVE TOUR (Poole's Cavern)
Join an expert cave guide to explore the spectacular ancient Poole’s Cavern cave system.
2.15pm - End of day
Collection at the coach park at Poole’s Cavern or a brisk walk back to the train station.

If for whatever reason you are unable to come to us for a learning visit, we can bring the learning to your school. With a little tweaking most of our workshops can be delivered as outreach activities at your school, my just one member of our learning team. Whether your topic be Prehistory, Romans or Victorians, our learning workshops can be tailored to fit your intended learning outcomes and school timetable.
