A slice of family history - Cake Competition event

A chocolate, sponge, lemon drizzle and fruit cake

As part of Buxton Heritage Weekend on 29 and 30 August, everyone is invited to take part in A Slice of Family History, a warm and welcoming baking event celebrating the treasured recipes passed down through generations.

Do you have a cake recipe inherited from a parent, grandparent or great‑grandparent? A bake that carries family memories, traditions or stories? This is your chance to share it.

Participants are encouraged to bring their cake, and the story behind it — helping to showcase Buxton’s rich baking heritage and the flavours that connect generations.

The event takes place on Sunday 30 August at The Pump Room, Buxton with …

  • Cakes on display from 10am
  • Tasting and judging at 1pm
  • Followed by an auction of the cakes at 2pm with all proceeds supporting the charitable work of the Trust.

This competition is jointly sponsored by Hargreaves of Buxton — a heritage independent store trading since 1865 and renowned for its quality homewares and timeless craftsmanship — and Buxton Pudding Emporium, a charming, heritage-inspired bakery and gift shop celebrated for its traditional Buxton puddings and handmade treats. Prizes on the day will be generously donated by both sponsors.

A Slice of Family History forms part of Buxton Heritage Weekend, taking place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August 2026, with two full days of heritage activities, performances, workshops, living history, vintage vehicles and family fun around The Pump Room, Assembly Rooms and along The Crescent.

What to do if you want to participate?

Anyone wishing to take part in the baking event should simply turn on the day, at the Pump Room from 10am, with their cake and story behind it. It’s as simple as that.
