We are seeking a Historic Buildings Surveyor – Pump Room, Buxton (Windows & Doors Restoration Project)
We are seeking an experienced Historic Buildings Surveyor conservation accredited architect to undertake a detailed condition survey and prepare a conservation specification for the restoration of the historic windows and doors at the Pump Room in Buxton.
The current windows were installed in 1912 and feature stained glass and bowed frames. Following restoration c20-30 years ago the windows are now in need of further work to safeguard their existence for the future
This heritage project involves assessing the condition of the existing joinery and developing a clear, conservation-led specification to enable specialist contractors to tender for the repair and restoration works.
Scope of Work
The appointed surveyor will be responsible for:
• Undertaking a detailed on-site condition survey of all historic wood framed windows and external doors
• Assessing the structural condition, decay, previous repairs, and paint finishes
• Identifying elements suitable for repair, conservation, or replacement in accordance with best conservation practice
• Producing a written condition report with photographic records
• Preparing a technical specification and schedule of works suitable for issuing to contractors as part of a tender package
• Supporting the tender process, including responding to contractor queries if required
• Existing plans of the Pump Room are available and a visual inspection and photographic report to support the role
• Work with High Peak Borough Council conservation officer to ensure that the project meets approval
Essential Experience
• Demonstrable experience working with listed buildings
• Strong understanding of traditional timber windows and doors, historic joinery techniques, and conservation methods
• Experience preparing technical specifications and tender documentation for heritage restoration works
• Ability to produce clear and detailed survey reports
Desirable
• Conservation accreditation (e.g. RICS, IHBC, AABC, or equivalent)
• Experience working on heritage assets of similar significance
Project Location: Buxton, Derbyshire
Engagement: Consultancy / contract basis
Start Date: By end of April 2026
