Do you have a treasured family cake recipe passed down through generations? A bake that reminds you of a parent, grandparent or great‑grandparent?
As part of our Buxton Heritage Weekend, we’re inviting anyone to take part in A Slice of History — a friendly baking activity celebrating the flavours, traditions and stories that connect families across Buxton.
On Sunday 30 August, The Pump Room will be filled with homemade cakes and cherished memories. Participants are encouraged to bring their bake, the recipe, and the story behind it. Whether it’s a classic sponge, a fruit cake that’s been in the family for decades, or something wonderfully unique, we’d love to hear what makes it special.
Cakes will be on display from 10am, with tasting and judging at 1pm, followed by an auction of the cakes at 2pm with all proceeds going to supporting the charitable work of the Trust.
This competition is jointly sponsored by Hargreaves of Buxton — a heritage independent store trading since 1865 and renowned for its quality homewares and timeless craftsmanship — and Buxton Pudding Emporium, a charming, heritage-inspired bakery and gift shop celebrated for its traditional Buxton puddings and handmade treats. Prizes on the day will be generously donated by both sponsors.
We are proud to be organising Buxton Heritage Weekend, and this is just one way we share and celebrate Buxton’s remarkable heritage with residents and visitors alike.

A Slice of Family History is one of many activities taking place during Buxton Heritage Weekend, running Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August 2026, with heritage talks, workshops, performances, living history, vintage vehicles and family fun across The Crescent, Pump Room and Assembly Rooms.
