Taking place on 23 & 24 March 2027 in the Buxton Crescent Hotel.
Taking inspiration from the beautifully embroidered slippers of the Regency period, spend two days exploring Silk Shading and Goldwork with the Royal School of Needlework at Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust.
Working in a soft palette of pink, white and gold, you will recreate a floral motif inspired by the delicate decoration found on historic Regency footwear. The design brings together the subtle colour and softness of Silk Shading with the texture and shine of traditional Goldwork embroidery.
You will learn how to build padded areas before covering them with Cutwork, carefully cutting and applying individual pieces of metal purl to create a smooth finish without cracking or damaging the metal. You will also explore Pearl Purl couching and Passing Thread to create defined Goldwork lines, alongside Chipping to fill areas with small pieces of metal that catch and reflect the light.
The course will also introduce S-ing, a decorative Goldwork technique that creates a distinctive wrapped line, adding another texture to the design.
Alongside the Goldwork, you will develop your Silk Shading to create the softly blended pink and white areas before adding gold and pearl beads as the finishing touch.
With two days to work through the design, there is plenty of opportunity to understand how these different techniques and materials can be layered together, creating an embroidery that feels delicate, decorative and distinctly Regency.
