The Buxton Crescent Visitor Experience

An immersive and interactive journey through nine rooms in the Buxton Crescent, which tells the stories of the Building, the town, and the historic characters who came here for the wonderful water. The Buxton Visitor Centre at The Pump Room

The town's Visitor Information Centre is located opposite The Crescent in the heart of Buxton. A natural starting-point for your visit to the town, it's a place to find inspiration, information and ideas for great experiences in the town, Peak District and High Peak. The Pump Room itself is also a stunning building, and an important part of Buxton's rich spa heritage.

How to find us

The Buxton Crescent and Buxton Visitor Centre at the Pump Room are in the centre of Buxton, Derbyshire set in the stunning Peak District National Park. Buxton is within an hours scenic drive of Manchester, Sheffield, Derby, Stoke on Trent and Nottingham. Even for those travellers coming from further afield, we're well worth the visit!

Located in the centre of Buxton

within easy walking distance of other attractions, shopping, bars, restaurants and parking. They are within 10 minutes walk from Buxton Station, Buxton Market Place, Buxton Opera House, The University of Derby Campus and The Springs Shopping Centre.

Parking

Pay and Display Parking bays are by Buxton Opera House. Town Centre Car Parks: Buxton Town Hall Pavilion Gardens The Springs Shopping Centre Parking is free after 6pm Electric car charging is available at The Lee Wood Hotel and The Old Manse Guesthouse at the discretion of the guesthouse/hotel management.

Public Transport

Visiting by Train

Buxton train station is a 5 – 10 minute walk from The Pump Room and Crescent and operates a regular service from Manchester Piccadilly calling at all stations to Buxton. Macclesfield Station is 25 minutes drive away. For more information on available services and any service updates visit the Trainline and Northern Rail websites.

Visiting by Bus

Buxton is served by bus routes to and from local cities, towns and villages. The main bus stops are located on the market place in Higher Buxton, a five minute walk from The Crescent and Pump Room High Peak Buses operate local bus services from Glossop, Stockport, Ashbourne, Derby, Manchester and Sheffield. The Skyline199 service operates until late 7 days a week, connecting Buxton with Stockport, Hazel Grove, New Mills and Disley. For details of times, fares and maps please see www.highpeakbuses.com.

Visitors with mobility impairments 

The Pump Room is accessible by wheelchair and electric scooter. The Buxton Crescent Visitor Experience will be accessible by wheelchair, there is a lift in the Crescent providing access to the Cellar spaces.  Accessible Derbyshire have further details and advice on access in the town and county www.accessiblederbyshire.org

Visitors with visual impairments

Assistance dogs are welcome in the Pump Room and Buxton Crescent Heritage Experience. Please contact a member of the Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust team if you have any special requirements.

We are working on having induction loops installed in The Visitor Centre at the Pump Room as soon as possible.

COVID-19 Measures

We are dedicated to ensuring the safety of visitors, customers and staff.  The team have worked hard to make condititions safe, secure and enjoyable so that The Buxton Visitor Centre is still a great place to visit.
Here is some information about the measures we have put in place to make our venues ‘Good to Go’.

Physical distancing measures

We have increased signage, installed screens, cleared away furniture, introduced a one-way system and limited capacity.

Cleaning and sanitising

We have introduced stringent cleaning measures and ask visitors to sanitise their hands on arrival.

Staff Health Checks

All staff will be asked for an update on their health on arrival and will stay at home if displaying any COVID-19 symptons.

Face coverings

Following government guidance, where possible face coverings must be used while inside our venues.

Contactless purchases

We ask customers to make purchases with card payments (ideally contactless if you have it) as much as possible.

Family Visits

We offer lots for family visitors, and new events and activities are added all the time. The Buxton Visitor Centre is free to visit, and is a 'well' of knowledge about things to do both with us, and around Buxton. Families can book for the Buxton Crescent Visitor Experience which has something for all ages - ideal for those looking for a fun and playful journey through Buxton's history. Group Visits

We offer a warm welcome and a range of options for fabulous heritage experiences at the Buxton Crescent and Pump Room Visitor Centre. We have packages available for groups to visit the Buxton Crescent Visitor Experience and Buxton Pump Room, which can be tailored to fit your group size, budget and timeframe. Among the options we can add to a standard tour include a private tasting of the Buxton Thermal Mineral Water, or an encounter with a historical character. Pre-booked groups are also welcome to attend evening events both in The Pump Room and Assembly Rooms as soon as the events programme restarts later in 2021. A range of talks and activities about the Crescent, its history, characters and the town’s spa history can be booked for your group - we're happy to travel to you, or arrange online sessions. The Crescent Experience, Hotel and Spa opened in October 2020.

Pay and Display Parking bays are located on The Square by Buxton Opera House.

The Trust is a registered charity that has been established to preserve the stunning Crescent buildings and to create and operate an inspiring visitor experience in The Crescent and Visitor Centre in The Pump Room. Their is be a year round programme of events, Friends and volunteer programme.  The Trust is run by people who are passionate about the Crescent, our heritage and the area.
