Karen – Finance officer
What do you do?
The job has evolved from being primarily a book-keeping role, previously done by external accountants, into one that now includes paying suppliers, payroll, Gift Aid and VAT returns. I work closely with Simon our CEO and David the finance trustee.
I have worked in finance for all my career, mostly in solicitor’s firms as a legal cashier in the City of London and Essex. I also worked for a Kuwaiti property company.
When did you start and why?
I started with the Trust in 2018 after moving to Buxton. I was the third employee; we now have 25. After my interview I did a shift in the Pump Room with Penny who was our lead volunteer at the time. One week later I was offered the job and was soon sitting in the Dome getting to grips with the accounting software. Back then the Crescent Experience was being designed, and the Pump Room was about to be refurbished. The tourist information was still in Pavilion Gardens. I have seen the gradual transformation of the Pump Room, Crescent Hotel and Experience into what we have today.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I have worked with many staff and volunteers, including all three CEO’s. The role connects me to many people in the community around Buxton. Our office in the Devonshire Dome looks out onto the roof.
Four interesting facts about you that people might not know.
Genealogy is an interest that I have. I spend time researching DNA matches, historic documents, both online and at archives to expand my family tree. I volunteer with the Coroners Court Support Service supporting family and witnesses attending inquests. I have been doing this for 7 years. I have been an athletics coach and team manager. This led to me becoming a Gamesmaker at the London 2012 Paralympics.
I have been a foster carer for Barnardo’s and Derbyshire County Council.
