‘FRIENDLY’ GEORGIAN BALL ATTRACTS VISITORS FROM FAR AND WIDE

Traveling over 5,000 miles from the Napa Valley to the High Peak, these words from Californian Boudicca Todi are not unexpected weatherwise, but it is fantastic to hear that the Crescent Trust’s recent activities continue our warm and welcoming Buxtonian traditions.
The Trust’s Georgian Week – a veritable cornucopia of Regency activities including caricatures, floral head-dresses and gaming – culminated in a glorious ball in the fabulous Assembly Rooms. Tickets for the ball were sold out months in advance. What makes it so popular?
Rob Cooper from West Yorkshire, was rather poetic, ‘the costume, the formality, seeing ladies in nice dresses, talking to people from all over the world, having a laugh. It’s a way for me to understand the past, it’s a sort of time travel.’ Then he added “I really want to be Colin Firth!’
Living in a period drama and leaving daily woes behind for even a brief time can be very seductive and the Regency era has been hugely popularised recently by tv adaptations and films. Who wouldn’t want to hang out in a world full of intrigue, plots, fabulous clothes and gossip?
Also traveling over 5000 miles to Buxton this year was Liz Webb from Ontario, Canada. Liz attended other Georgian balls in the UK this year but what makes Buxton so unmissable for her?
‘There’s a feel of the past here. Buildings exude atmosphere. What brought people here in the past has not changed. Who lived here? Who brought it to life? The lifeblood of the people is in the walls.
